5 things that make a river cruise easier for over 60’s
By David Libeau, Travelwise Tour Leader
I’ve been in travel for more than 50 years, and I’ve sailed rivers in Europe more times than I can politely count. What I notice, every time, is this: a good river cruise is one of the most comfortable ways to see a lot of Europe after 60 – if a few things are done well.

Here are the five that make the biggest difference.
1. Unpack once
This is the quiet luxury of a river ship. You settle into your cabin in Budapest (or wherever you embark), and the scenery comes to you. No packing and unpacking every other night. No “where did I put my adaptor?” at 7am. For many of our guests, that single fact is what turns a long trip from tiring into enjoyable.
2. Choose the right cabin – and the right ship
You don’t need the grandest suite. You do want a comfortable bed, a decent bathroom, and a window you actually use. On Avalon ships, the panorama suites with the bed facing the view are a favourite for a reason: you wake up to the river, not a corridor wall. Ask us before you book. A little advice here saves a lot of “I wish we’d known.”

3. Pace the shore days
River ports are beautiful, and they can also mean cobblestones, gangways and a bit of walking. The trick is not to do everything. On a well-run cruise you’ll usually have a choice of excursions – a gentler city walk, a more active option, or time on board. I always tell guests: the ship is not a penalty box. Sitting on deck with a coffee while the group heads up a hill is allowed. Encouraged, even.
4. Let someone else hold the logistics
Flights, transfers, tipping, port times, “what time is the coach back?” – that’s the work that wears people out when they travel independently. On a Travelwise river cruise, your Tour Leader is there for exactly that. I’m not there to march you about. I’m there so you can enjoy Vienna without wondering whether you’ve missed the boat. (We haven’t. I checked.)
5. Travel with people who are on the same wavelength
The river is the scenery. The group is the company. Our guests are mostly New Zealanders 60 and over who like to see the world without rushing it. Meals together, a glass of wine at the end of the day, a laugh when the unexpected happens – that’s what makes the week feel easy. You don’t have to be the life of the party. You just don’t have to do it all alone.
A river cruise isn’t “easier” because it’s less interesting. It’s easier because the hard parts have been thought through. Unpack once, choose a cabin that suits you, don’t overdo the walking, let us handle the details, and enjoy the people you’re travelling with.
