Why some tours feel easy after 60 (and others don’t)
By Anna Were, Travelwise Tour Leader
People often ask what makes a tour “easy.” It isn’t usually the famous sights. It’s the small things that happen around them – the ones that save your energy for the parts you actually came for.

After more than 15 years hosting tours with my husband Alec, these are the comforts I notice guests appreciate most.
1. Someone else handles the bags
On a Travelwise tour, you are not left wrestling suitcases on and off coaches. Drivers and Tour Leaders help with loading and hotel arrivals. That sounds minor until you’ve done it eight times in a fortnight. Saving your back is not a luxury. It’s how you still feel like going out after dinner.
2. Meals that are already thought about
Deciding where to eat, in a language you don’t speak, after a long day, is tiring. When breakfasts and many dinners are included, the group can sit down together without a committee meeting on a street corner. You can still slip off for a quiet lunch if you want one. The point is you don’t have to organise every meal.
3. A seat, a routine, and time to breathe
A good Tour Leader keeps the day clear: what time we leave, where we meet, what’s optional. There’s usually a mix of structured sightseeing and free time. That pause – a coffee, a rest on the ship, an hour in your room – is what keeps the week enjoyable. Group travel should not feel like a route march.
4. Feeling included without being on show
Solo travellers, quieter guests, people who like a chat and people who don’t – a tour works when nobody is left standing at the edge. We watch for that. A word at breakfast, a seat saved at dinner, a check that you’re happy with the pace. You don’t need to be outgoing. You just need to know you belong in the group.
5. Help close at hand, without fuss
The best support is the kind you barely notice until you need it. A delayed flight, a lost adaptor, a day that’s hotter than expected. Your Tour Leader is there for the practical things, and the Travelwise office is behind us. We can’t carry anyone who isn’t independently mobile – but we can make the path as smooth as possible, and we do.
None of these make the headlines. They do make the difference between coming home tired and coming home glad you went. That’s the sort of comfort I care about – the unshowy kind that lets you enjoy the destination, and the people you’re travelling with.
